THE MARGINS column for Sat, May 3 2008 Waterloo Region Record
Books page
This region is
reading The 100-Mile Diet, as chosen by the One Book One
Community committee of booksellers and librarians. What are other
One Book programs reading? London Ont. is doing Three Day Road
(Waterloo’s choice 2 years ago); and Three Cups of Tea
(Penguin,$16.50) has been chosen by four American cities. Here’s
what Christa Van Daele of Waterloo said in her mini-review: “Three
Cups of Tea dazzles with its account of a quiet hero, Greg
Hortenson, who collaborates with elders in remote Pakistan
villages to build schools for girls. His story makes
autobiographical as well as grassroots, humble, political senses.
My husband and I couldn’t put it down… sure to be a movie…
inspiring and instructive in several dimensions.” The book has
been on American bestseller lists for 30-plus weeks, and on the
Globe & Mail’s list for 4 weeks.
Was it
inevitable that bestselling books on atheism (The God Delusion,
God is Not Great) would be followed by books defending belief
in God? Chris Hedges, a commentator on American religion,
responded with I Don’t Believe in Atheists (Free Press,
$28.99). Timothy Keller, A Presbyterian pastor in New York, weighs
in with Reason for God (Dutton, $24.95). The Canadian
founder of the Centre for Progressive Christianity, Gretta Vosper,
feels that it’s not what we believe but how we act that counts:
With or Without God. And then there is a trinity of books on
Jesus: Barrie Wilson (who spoke at St.Jerome’s last night) on
How Jesus Became Christian (HarperCollins, $29.95);
Vancouverite Rex Weyler on The Jesus Sayings (Anansi,
$29.95), and Deepak Chopra on the Third Jesus (Crown,
$28.). Chopra is parodied by Mike Myers’ movie due out in early
June called Love Guru, about a spiritual swami. Even though some
Hindus may find it offensive, Chopra does not. His newest book,
also out in June, is called Why is God Laughing? –the path
to joy and spiritual optimism (Random, $25.95).
Michael
Chabon’s The Yiddish Policeman’s Union (HarperCollins,
$17.25) has just won the Nebula Award for best novel by the
Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. (It’s also
shortlisted for the Edgar mystery prize and the Hugo fantasy
award). Chabon, who lives in California, talks about the
inspiration for the book in Maps and Legends (McSweeney’s,
$26.50), an essay collection just published. He came across a
Yiddish phrase book for travellers and began to imagine a setting
where the language flourished away from its eastern-European
origins. Why not Alaska, rather than Israel, he wondered, as the
country chosen for a post-World War II Jewish nation. And thus an
alternative history was born. The results are not only
award-winning (Chabon has already won the Pulitzer Prize) but have
caught the attention of the Coen brothers who have chosen it as
