Camilla Gibb,
Charles
Foran, &Ruth
Rakoff -
Nov 16'10
|
What
a thoughtful evening with some of Canada's most
interesting writers. Charles Foran share his
impassioned look at Mordecai Richler's life in his
new biography of the prolific Canadian writer.
Interestingly, Mordecai's wife, Florence agreed to
not have a final say on the heartfelt book. Ruth
Rakoff shared a poignant and striking chapter from
her memoir of her cancer journey. Camilla Gibb read
an evocative early chapter from her new book. Her
descriptions of the food in Vietnam made us year for
soup after the event ended.

Adwoa Badoe -
Nov 13'10 |
|
Adwoa
Badoe is always a joy to have at the bookstore.
She read a chapter of her newest book, Between
Sisters, followed by a robust discussion about
the book, Adwoa's writing process, the teen
experience and more. This is Adwoa's first novel for
teens and she says:
"It is my desire, when I read, that we see through
Gloria's eyes, taste the flavours on her tongue and
smell the odours of her world. I hope my audience
can get to know her and like her enough to want to
know her journey."

Alison Pick & David Smith - Nov
11'10 |
|
We
had a packed house for our Remembrance Day event.
David presented a short film about his father's war
experience before speaking about the book that they
had written together, Lifting the Silence. Alison
pick wowed the crowd with her reading and personal
story connected to her novel, Far to Go. We were
pleased to share that Words Worth has awarded Alison
our 2010 Words Worthy Award. For more information on
the award, click HERE.
Dear
Chuck, Tricia and Dave,
Just wanted to write and say a
big THANK YOU for putting on a
wonderful event yesterday.
It's always such a treat to read
for a Words Worth audience, and of course to see you
all as well. And I was especially touched by the
Words Worthy award. I really appreciate your
endorsement and enthusiasm about the book. I've
passed along the news to Anansi, and they're
thrilled as well.
Thank you again, and already
looking forward to next time.
Warmly, Alison |

John Ralston Saul - Nov 4'10 |
|
John Ralston Saul was a treat to
listen to. He engaged the audience with fascinating
facts about Canada's early history and the
Extraordinary Canadians Series that he has been
editing. According to him, Canada's early
government, bills were passed based on who could
have a better fist fight! Who knew that we came from
such anarchy!

Kenneth Oppel - Oct 30'10 |
|
Kenneth Oppel is a delight! The
award winning author entertained us with readings
from his new book Half Brother and answered
fascinating questions about his life as a writer.
His first book (now long out of print) he gave to
Road Dahl, a family friend. Roald loved it so much
that he made his publisher distribute the book!

Sandra Birdsell, Annabel Lyon &
Alissa York - Oct 23'10 |
|
Wow, you would think that these
three dynamic women have been touring together for
months. Sandra, Annabel and Alissa got along and
read well together. In fact this was the first event
that they had ever done together! The audience hung
onto every word. And just remember, if you ever go
to BC, make sure you walk around the BC Ferries with
Annabel Lyon's The Golden Mean face out. (The BC
Ferries has banned the book from being sold in their
gift shops due to the cover art).

|
Erin Bow - Oct 23'10 |
|
A full house come out to
celebrate local author, Erin Bow's fabulous book for
teens; Plain Kate. Erin was gracious in her
reading and discussion about the book. We are so
excited for her success and can't wait to read her
next book - though we aren't sure when that will be!

Small Press Event - Oct 18'10 |
|

Dear
Words Worth gang,
Thanks so much for selling books last night and
spreading the word. The authors (and I think the
audience) had a really good time last night at the
Starlight, and I hope that enjoyment was reflected
in some book sales.
Thanks,
Caroline, for the Starlight help and making
cupcakes, and thank you, Mandy, for hosting
the
second half of the night! Really appreciated.
Best of luck
on the rest of your fall events, and I hope we can
team up for another event like this in 2011.

Joseph Boyden - Oct 14'10 |
|
Joseph read and talked about his
newest book which is part of the Extraordinary
Canadians series from Penguin Canada. His
contribution is a straight history of Louis Riel and
Gabriel Dumont. Of course it's written with Joseph's
unique flair and sounds terrific. He noted this was
the most challenging book for him to write so far.
It was meant to take one year and took three. He
said he's back to writing historical fiction again
and will complete his trilogy but may have a
different book in the meantime. Joseph is working on
a book based on the Jesuits coming to Canada in the
1600's that he says is currently taking him over. It
was a wonderful evening.

Jack Whyte - Oct 7'10 |
|
The audience that attended our in-store event with
Jack Whyte were fascinated by how he came to write
the book. He also share with us how the movie
Braveheart did not represent the true William
Wallace story. This book sets the record straight
and is also hard to put down! Jack Whyte was born and raised in
Scotland and emigrated to Canada in 1967. He is an
actor, orator, singer, and poet, and was awarded an
honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) for his
contribution to Canadian popular fiction. He is the
author of the internationally bestselling Dream of
Eagles series and the Templar Trilogy. He lives in
Kelowna, British Columbia. Read more about the event

Mark McEwan
- Oct 5'10 |
The
Toronto restaurateur and host of The Food Network show The Heat,
joined us for a delicious meal to celebrate his new cookbook, Great
Food at Home, at Uptown 21. Mark was gracious and made sure to speak
with everyone that attended the event. He was also impressed with
the food and will be doing another event at the restaurant on
November 30. |
|
Terry Fallis
- Sept 22'10 |
|
The Stephen Leacock Award for humour was awarded
to Terry a few years ago for his hilarious satire of Canadian
politics in The Best Laid Plans. The book was this year's One Book
One Community pick. Terry was charming and funny as he discussed
parlimentary language and how it applied to the more risque scenes
in the book, the process of self publishing and whether there will
be another book in the series. An audience member yelled out that
there needs to be one soon, because she is not getting any younger! |
