Meet Author Brian Van Norman in store!
Next Week: Come in and meet author Brian Van Norman as we celebrate the launch of his new novel, Immortal Water!
Once a teacher, theatre director and adjudicator, local author Brian Van Norman left those worlds to travel with his wife, Susan, and take up writing as a full time pursuit. He has journeyed to every continent and sailed nearly every sea on the planet. His base is Waterloo, Ontario. Immortal Water is his second novel.
Immortal Water offers a unique portrayal of the very human fear of ageing. The novel depicts two men from two time periods: the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon in the 16th Century and a retired teacher named Ross Porter in contemporary times, both in the midst of life altering crises. Inside parallel plots the two men form an obsession with a quixotic search for the mythical fountain of youth. The protagonists sparkle into fullness as each is depicted in his struggle to remain vital while age slowly steals his significance away.

Author Event Wed March 7
Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 7:00pm
Waterloo Public Library
We've been fans of Ian Hamilton's crime novels since his first book came out about seven years ago. The farflung adventures of the mercurial heroine Ava Lee are smart, well paced thrillers with an engaging story arc through ten novels. We're always thrilled to welcome Ian to Waterloo. His personal story and his specialized knowledge around much of Asia make for a top tier thriller series.
The Imam of Twai-Twai opens with Ava luxuriating in a hotel in Yunnan Province with the actress Pang Fai, with whom she has begun a secret relationship. She receives an urgent phone call from Chang Wang, the right hand to the billionaire Tommy Ordonez and one of Uncle’s oldest friends. Years ago, Ava and Uncle helped Tommy recover $50 million in a land swindle.
Chang asks Ava to fly to Manila to meet with his friend, Senator Miguel Ramirez. Ramirez asks Ava to investigate a college in Tawi-Tawi, an island province in the Philippines, which he suspects is training terrorists. Ava’s investigation leads to a partnership with a CIA agent, and together they attempt to stop an international plot, horrific in size and scope, only to have it turn on them. Ava’s judgement and morals — which Uncle helped her forge — are tested like never before.

SHELF LIFE: Creative Bibliotherapy Workshops -- Brought to you by Words Worth Books
What does fear look like and what tools do you use to face it?
In this workshop you will learn how prominent writers answer these questions and how books teach us to live a life of more freedom and joy. Using literary fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and essays, we'll explore how writers have learned to cultivate resilience in the face of rear and offer tools of insight for readers into their own journey. Through readings and discussion we'll reflect on various aspects of fear such as fear of change, grief and loss, and fear of the unknown.
All resources will be provided that even--you are already prepared!
Your guide: Mandy Brouse, co-owner of Words Worth Books

Learning the alphabet has never before been more fun, or more beautiful. A stunning collection of birds and letters, words and illustrations, stories and silhouettes, A Bird Chronicle is a children’s story book, ABC book, and art book and a keepsake to treasure for years to come.
A note from our manager, Kristen Hahn:
It is with mingled excitement and sadness that I must announce I'm moving on. Words Worth Books has been my beloved home for the past four years, and bookselling has been my vocation for the past twenty (eep!) but I'm striking out on a different path to the shores of Lake Huron.
I'm dearly going to miss my colleagues--my friends--Chis, Maggie, Jessie, Curtis, and John; and especially Dave and Mandy. You guys are like family to me. It's funny that after having worked so long with ideas and words, that I now simply cannot find the words to express how grateful I am for our time together.
So I'll instead say to you: I have a lovely bottle of Auchentoshan... let's look at our schedules, figure out our drives home, and have a night of it!
And one last thing...
We've already mentioned how excited and proud we are for Kristen Ciccarelli, author of THE LAST NAMSARA. But we want to say it again. A major new talent has arrived and we can't wait to see her soar.
Follow this link to watch a beautiful video in which she talks about why she writes, about when she stopped, and why you should never let other people define you to yourself. (And--we'll admit--we got a little something in our eye when we watched this.)
Another thing you'll see in this video is her process of making that DRAGON CUP. You'll have a chance to win one at her booklaunch on October 4.
