Staff Review: Don't Be Evil

September 8, 2022 Words Worth Books

Title/Author: Don't Be Evil: The Case Against Big Tech - Rana Foroohar

Genre(s): Business, Economics, Technology, Politics

The age of monetary-based capitalism is over! Now your data is worth more than whatever is in your wallet. Foroohar digs deep into the personalities of Big Tech giants. 'Don't Be Evil' was the first line of Google's Code of Conduct, yet the importance of that principle had diminished over the years. This book demonstrates how the technology behind Big Tech ensures their position as leaders of the online world. As scary as this may seem, it gets worse. Foroohar describes how Big Tech has infiltrated every aspect of our lives, whether we realize it or not.

Staff Review: Bewilderment

Title/Author: Bewilderment - Richard Powers

Genre(s): Literary Fiction, Nature & the Environment, Political

Richard Powers does a great job in Bewilderment of retelling Flowers for Algernon in an environmental context. Theo Byrne is an astrobiologist with a son that is as special as he is troubled. Young Robin is a stand in for the rest of us living against the backdrop of his previous novel, Overstory. This book is touching, beautifully written and if not the equal of Overstory, it bests much else on offer this year (and this is a hell of a year).

Title/Author: Speak, Silence - Kim Echlin

Genre(s): Literary Fiction, Politics

One of my favourites of 2021. This is a literary novel of high style & hushed brilliance with a singular, lasting power. There’s not a wasted word anywhere, and it’s damned-near perfect!
